Taxi Driver Jobs in New York City

There are few icons in the world that are as well recognized as the New York City Yellow Taxi Cab. And, few jobs that are a more reliable source of exceptional, entry level income than that of a New York City Yellow Taxicab Driver.

As the United States and the rest of the world settle into the deepest economic downturn in most of our life-times the price of real estate goes down, the stock market bounces off new lows weekly and, jobs and paychecks become scarce.

So, what do we do? We conserve, we innovate, we suffer, or we surrender to ruin. However, there is one light at the end of the tunnel, the job of driving a Yellow Taxicab in New York City.

Not everybody can do it. But, almost everybody can qualify and give it a try. A full time working taxi driver, even in these tough times is probably earning north of one thousand dollars per week. Does this mean that all taxi drivers earn this much? No. What it means is that there is a viable way to earn the national median income or more, and there is room for many thousands more each year.

Well, it’s not really a job. It is a business, and you have to commit. You will need to spend between four hundred and a thousand dollars to receive your license. Why such a big spread? All taxi drivers need to pass the N.Y. City Taxi exam, and most applicants are NOT experts in the geography of New York City, which consists of five boroughs, scores of bridges and highways, hundreds of relevant landmarks, schools, hotels, theaters, hospitals museums, parks and more.

To be completely prepared for the Taxi Driver Test is to be completely prepared to drive a taxi. Many people approach the taxi business as if it is easy. For a limited few this is the case. But, for most, especially those of us who have been away from school for a decade or two or three, and those of us from local suburbs or other parts of the country and world, extensive preparation is not only wise but unavoidable.

The good news is that no matter how many people apply for taxi licenses and pass the exams there is a tremendous turn over of manpower in the industry, creating a never ending demand for newly licensed, entry level Taxi Drivers.

Long thought of as an “immigrant” job, as the economy weakens and first generation Americans enter the New York City Yellow Taxi Cab work force,  the immigrant, or nationalized demographic declines and the number of American born drivers increase.

So, many who come in desperation to the yellow taxi cab industry are surprised to learn that working as an independent taxi driver is a wonderful thing. Increased freedom or, the opportunity to invest in a taxicab or, in the coveted taxi medallion can pay off handsomely. And of course the stories you will have to tell…..
