The defensive driving class, for New York City, known as the point and insurance discount program P.I..R.P. is conducted in many places throughout New York State. The program was designed to allow drivers to reduce points from their driving records as well as reduce the cost of insurance for qualified drivers.
In 1998 the New York City Taxi & limousine Commission required all taxi drivers to attend the defensive driving course no less than once every thirty-six months. The NY City Agency also utilizes the program for point reduction for its Critical Driver Program, under which taxi drivers can be suspended for thirty days for accumulating six points. Drivers can also have their New York City Taxi Operators License, (HACK LICENSE) revoked for accumulating ten points in a fifteen month period.
All new applicants in New York City for a Taxi License, Car Service License, or a Limousine License must attend this course prior to submitting their application to the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission.
The number one provider of the course is the Master Cabbie Taxi Academy in Queens which offers the course six days each week, more than three hundred classes each year.
